Jim Cymbala, Sr. Pastor of The Brooklyn Tabernacle, has written some wonderfully powerful books. I have enjoyed reading them all in particualr ‘Breakthrough Prayer’. It’s message is simple, yet impactful, uplifting and encouraging.
Christy Tennant says:
I’m reading a work of fiction right now that contains wonderful spiritual insights, in a kind of “rough around the edges” sort of way: “Jayber Crow,” by Wendell Berry. He gives an outsider view of the church, while clearly appreciating everything that is good about Christianity and those who truly embody it. I think it’s important to read what “others” see, especially when we are so deeply inside the church. It’s vital that we be aware of how those on the outside see us, and thereby how they see Jesus (i.e. Jesus in us).
I just finished a brand new book, hot off the presses from Baker Academic, called “Performing the Sacred: Theology and Theatre in Dialogue,” by Todd E. Johnson (professor at Fuller Seminary) and Dale Savidge (theater professor and executive director of Christians in the Theatre Arts, or CITA). If you know anyone looking to have a career in the theatre, this is a great book for them. I wish I had something like this when I was first starting out as an actress 18 years ago!
